The editing tools are a little sparse in appearance, so one wonders how it could enable all those in such a short amount of time. The program does a pretty good job with saturation, but it’s not as good as some other programs. In addition, ACDSee Photo Studio is missing the drag-and-drop features found in Lightroom. This means that you can’t have two of a photo open at the same time and still edit it. You need to switch between files in order to make changes to them.

PhotoStudio Professional’s Spectra chart is a great tool for making quick color corrections, and you can use the grid to dial in parts of the picture to enhance. I prefer working with the color monitor to make corrections, which is only available in ACDSee’s Develop mode.
Image editing tools included the latest ACDSee’s Watermark feature and ACDSee Faces. I liked that you can easily make faces even more prominent by increasing the size, and the people mode’s attempt to help you make faces easier to see by grouping faces by facial features was pretty impressive. However, ACDSee probably could be the only single program to crop a face.
ACDSee’s Zenith Mode is great for quickly finding scenes within a photograph. It’s well-designed and you can drag it around the screen to get the angle just right, but ACDSee offers no way to easily see the landscape as a rectangular scene within the photo. Lightroom has a feature like that as does PhotoLab.
ACDSee’s Develop mode is a complete Adobe Lightroom clone. It’s both easier to learn and is a faster photo workflow than Lightroom. ACDSee’s Develop mode is the only editing app I know of that lets you convert raw files to the same file format as raw files taken with your camera. ACDSee’s Develop mode lets you apply the same shot-by-shot adjustments you can apply to JPEGs.
I’m not sure why ACDSee doesn’t include a camera simulation mode, either for JPEGs or raw files, given that it has all the raw file-converting functions it does. ACDSee’s raw file converter is a pretty efficient tool that lets you brush on some minor adjustments and preview results, while simultaneously correcting your raw files. Some cropping tools are missing, as well. The same raw file converter lets you convert a group of files together for batch conversion.

Using the colour wheel is fun and Ive probably used it more than any other application in ACDSee. It serves its purpose of helping you alter colours and the nitty-gritty of lightroom is more than enough for an amateur. It also has a built-in colour histogram tool, which can be very useful for correcting problems in the white balance, contrast, and lighting. Theres also a ton of creative options to help you superimpose images together, add text, and create a bunch of cool effects like blurring, mixing, and so on. Using the DVS App Filter, you can add people and pets and other items to your images.
Not much to say except that in some ways, ACDSee Pro 5 is better and in other ways, it’s less good than it was in the previous version. I’m not a fan of the name change. The software has become heavier, making this an improvement in only some ways. Add the cost of the full version – $240 for a sticker price of $150 – and you have a high-end program that’s only marginally better than its predecessor.
I have not tried ACDSee Pro 5 yet. However, I have read from a few places that it is not a good program for post-processing. And that’s very unfortunate, because ACDSee Pro 5 is an improved version of an excellent camera editor. For one thing, it has a much better menu design, a fact that the novice will appreciate. It also includes an extremely useful Lens Correction feature. ACDSee Pro 5’s main advantage is that it is an all-in-one package, meaning it does everything one would want a good camera editor to do: automatic white balance, sharpening, contrast, colour, saturation, exposure and noise reduction. All the tools are already there, and this is one reason why ACDSee Pro 5 is such a good value for money.
