I am not able to reproduce it using the basic Dovecot example code you showed me. The key to reproducing is to block a constant number of packets in do_read; when the other side is configured to a small enough window that it’s not a race condition, Thunderbird works fine.

Thunderbird will treat a folder as an account. If you have an account for work, you dont want all the trash mail from personal accounts you email goes to as well. It looks to be an account issue. What you probably want is a folder view. This will tell you if the folder is a trash email account or not. Once that is done, drag the folder to a trash folder. If you drag the folder to a folder view, it will be treated as an account. Otherwise, it isnt treated as an account.
With some email clients, you can specify certain messages are not to be stored by the program, but with Thunderbird, it stores them all by default. With other email clients, you can have a separate folder for each account and manually delete them from the overall inbox, but TB handles them with the default folders.
