I would like to see Epson come out with an updated interface for VueScan. There are plenty of features and sliders that are not explained well, and the user can not be expected to have any kind of intuitive understanding of how to use it effectively. I do not understand why any developer would not want to provide a tried and true graphical approach to scanning and saving your images with Epson Scan.
It’s great to see your review on the new version of Vuescan. The demo was very helpful in understanding how to set up the scanner and its features. I like that the new version fixes the issues I have with the other versions. I like the new “Crop” feature and, of course, the “Super sharp” setting. The new SLRW option is cool too, as I was able to set it to add the white filter (for black and white negatives) and the negative filter (for color negatives) at the same time. You get to choose between black and white or color printing. However, even if you set the SLRW to “add” the filters, you won’t get any printing, and the default (black and white) will be used. Also, the new “magenta” and “cyan” presets are cool. But, since I don’t have a Leica for these images, I didn’t get to use these features.
Thanks for the review and the update on the new version of Vuescan. It is certainly a program that performs well in most respects. I love the menus as they give you the opportunity to easily modify the settings. However, I have a couple of issues to call out. I have to use either Epson or HP and the options (especially the ACS) have a tendency to take forever to process and I’ve experienced freezing. I also noticed a difference from the last version in Windows 10. I like that it is simple to use and that it is free to download. The only way to make it better is make the interface more user friendly.

One big issue with VueScan and the Nikon D7100 is that the front menu icons are clipped to the right of the window. It is not possible to move the folder window anyplace else. To compensate, there is a little “snap” icon that you can click with the mouse to move the window to left or right.
I have never had a problem with my VueScan unit with USB 2.0 connections but have encountered problems with 3.0. When my scanner was installed a cable, my hubs 3.0 connectors were not available in the Finder. I had to dig my file out of some unreachable folder by hand.
All my ExactScans were recognized by VueScan. The two USB hubs were easy, and although the default is to show the menu icons in the exact format that VueScan recognizes them (see left image), clicking the little “snap” icon lets you position the menu icons anywhere you like. The problem is that the menu icons don’t disappear unless you click the little “snap” icon again.
Here’s the problem. I have each USB port wired into a separate hub and all my ExactScan, ScanSnap S1500M, etc. scanners and my desktop are connected to one hub and it has always worked fine. I have had 3.0 hubs for years with no problems. When I upgraded to Catalina (10.15) I had hoped to have a 3.0 hub on one end and a 2.0 hub on the other and then they would both be recognized by VueScan. But the only 2.0 hubs I could find or the Finder would recognize were USB 2.0 hubs. I set one up and was thrilled with VueScan instantly working with it. But then my desktop was upgraded to 3.0 and my hub was no longer recognized.
In almost all cases, VueScan can recognize your scanner and you are good to go. But there is one problem that is more commonly experienced than just mine. Some scanners do not know how to talk to VueScan and refuse to recognize it. The only solution is to disable the auto-update feature and manually download the latest software. I have no idea when these scanners were built.

What’s new in VueScan?
Hamrick Software’s big innovation in VueScan is the introduction of Film Strip Scanning. This is accomplished by enabling the film to be run through the scanner a second time, holding the film in the same position with the same movements, and using the power of the scanner to analyze the original. Vuescan then combines data from the original and the copy to come up with a very accurate preview of what the image will look like. It’s not perfect, but this is an advance over Previewing, where all you can do is see how the image might look when printed or posted. Regardless of the paper type you use to scan, you can re-run the preview under legacy mode to see your results with no limitations on the length of your film strip. (You have to change the new settings to re-run the preview under Epson Scan.)
