As I say, it is a simplification of the functionality, and requires you to reboot WMP to start using it. It seems to be the same version as WMP 10, and I expect this will be the case until we have a new Windows Media Player version every time there is a new version of Windows.

It comes with a suitable Skin to give it an honest-to-goodness Windows look. You can also install custom skins. I did try to install one which I saw as a ZIP file, but it would not play. Also unlike MusicBee, which limits you to 24 hours of streaming for £10 per month, WindowsPlayer lets you pick any number you like (limited to 30). It only takes 5-10 seconds to open a song or album in WindowsPlayer, and the gapless playback mode works consistently, making it a bit better than the Zune client. It’s certainly much easier to use than the Zune client.

The best aspect of WindowsPlayer is its library management functionality. To the right of the track list there’s a light grey ‘MusicList’, which displays the local music collection, and also offers options to display the album art on the track list, as well as in ‘Details’ view. Very nice.
